Acrobat costs $14.99 to $19.99 a month. If you only fill and sign PDFs, you may not need it

Adobe Acrobat is the standard PDF tool, and it is priced like one. But a lot of people land on its pricing page because of a single form. Here is what Acrobat costs in 2026, what the free Reader already does, and what the paid plans actually add.

What Acrobat costs (as of October 2026)

These are Adobe's individual plan prices in US dollars, taken from adobe.com/acrobat/pricing as of October 2026. They are before tax, and Adobe can change them.

PlanAnnual, billed monthlyAnnual, prepaidMonth-to-month
Acrobat Standard$14.99/mo$179.88/yr$24.99/mo
Acrobat Pro$19.99/mo$239.88/yr$29.99/mo
Acrobat Studio$24.99/mo$299.88/yr$34.99/mo

Acrobat Studio adds an AI Assistant, PDF Spaces and Adobe Express Premium on top of Pro. That is not what someone with one form needs, so the rest of this guide compares Standard and Pro.

The early termination fee

The cheap-looking "$14.99/month" price is an annual commitment paid monthly. Adobe's pricing page says, for annual plans: "Fee applies up to half your remaining annual commitment if you cancel after 14 days." The month-to-month plan is listed as "Cancel anytime, no fee."

In practice: if you sign up for the annual plan, use it once, and cancel in month two, you can still owe a large part of the remaining months. People have complained about this on Adobe's own community forum, including one user who said the plan was worded as if it were month to month. Read the terms at checkout and set a calendar reminder if you take a trial.

Tip: month-to-month is not the same as cheap. It avoids the fee but costs $24.99 or $29.99 a month. For a one-off job, one month of that is still more than the one-time price of some alternatives below.

Free Acrobat Reader already fills and signs

This is the part pricing pages don't lead with. The free Acrobat Reader has a Fill & Sign tool. You can type into form fields, add text, and add a signature that you type, draw or upload. Then you save the file. No subscription.

Other free tools do the same job without any Adobe software: Mac Preview, Microsoft Edge's built-in viewer, and, since Chrome 149 (June 2026), Chrome's own basic fill, add-text and drawn-signature support. We walk through them in how to sign a PDF without uploading it.

Reader's downsides are real but small: it is a big install, and it nudges you toward paid features.

What paid Acrobat adds

Adobe's pricing page lists the paid features. These are the ones that matter, and the reasons to pay:

If your job is on that list, Acrobat is a fair price for what it does. A free viewer will not replace it.

If you only fill, sign, redact or merge

Here is a plain way to decide:

Penwise, for the narrow job

Disclosure: we make Penwise.

Penwise is a Chrome extension. Filling form fields, adding text anywhere (so it works on non-fillable PDFs too), check marks, today's date, highlight, white-out and signatures are free. Signatures can be drawn, typed in a handwriting font or uploaded, and saved on your device. You download or print with no watermark.

Everything runs in your browser. Your file is not uploaded and there is no account. Pro is $9.99, paid once, no subscription, and adds true redaction (the text and images are removed from the file), page organizing (reorder, rotate, delete) and merging PDFs.

What Penwise does not do: edit existing text, OCR, compress, convert to or from Word, send documents out for multi-party signature, keep an audit trail, or apply certificate-based digital signatures. If you need any of those, you need something else. You can also try it in your browser, free; the web version fills, signs and downloads, while Pro features are in the extension only.

What it costs over 1 and 3 years

Using Adobe's prices above, as of October 2026, before tax. The Adobe figures assume you keep the annual plan the whole time; the 3-year numbers also assume prices don't change, which they may.
