How to fill out a PDF form for free, without a surprise paywall

A common trap: you spend twenty minutes typing into an online PDF editor, click Download, and only then get asked for a subscription. Here's how to avoid it, and which free tools actually let you save your work.

First: is your PDF "fillable"?

Open the PDF and click on a blank line. If you can type straight into a box, it's a fillable form and almost any PDF viewer can fill it. If clicking does nothing, it's a flat PDF: a picture of a form. You'll need a tool that lets you place text boxes anywhere on the page.

How to avoid the "pay to download" trap

Filling a PDF with Penwise

Disclosure: we make Penwise.

  1. Install Penwise and click its icon, or click it while viewing a PDF in Chrome.
  2. Click any form field and type. For flat PDFs, choose Text and click where you want to write.
  3. Add a signature, initials, the date or check marks if needed.
  4. Click Download. That's free, with no watermark.

Paid features (redaction, page organizing and merging) are clearly marked, and you'll see what's paid before you start, not after.

Tip: if a form's text comes out tiny or overflows, resize your text box. In Penwise, drag the corner handle to change the font size.
